Abstract
The fundamental factors that control the market’s volatility and stability depend on cost
control and operational efficiency and are directly influenced by energy and sustainability
management. This problem is depicted and addressed through the constantly forming,
changing and evolving international Climate and Environmental legislation, guidelines and
regulations by setting a number of specific targets that should be applied in every sector of the
modern business industry. More specifically, E.U. has declared the 20-20-20 target that
intends to have been delivered by year 2020, focusing on the promotion, establishment and
evolution of the current practices and policies concerning cleaner production and consumption
strategies.
In this framework, this study presents the development of an innovative, objective and
effective assessment methodology centered on the principles of zero waste management and
eco – efficiency performance that is implemented throughout the management pyramid of a
company. Water, Energy, Carbon Emissions and Waste are the critical factors that are being
measured by this generic model. The assessment method takes into consideration the
qualitative and quantitative data that are raised from the inquiry of the company’s
documentation and the information derived from contacts with the business’s stakeholders. In
consistency with the priorities of the apiece sector and company, a number of specific eco –
efficiency performance indicators, normalization indexes and weights have been selected,
which are estimated and valued for every stage of the business’s management. The
configuration of the data is based on established scientific methodologies, standardization
guides and tools such as: Lifecycle Analysis, Cost Benefit Analysis, Environmental Impact
Assessment, SWOT Analysis and Sensitivity Analysis. The auditing phase is followed by the
export of a comprehensive report that includes the outcomes of the conducted evaluation,
proposing action plans, optimization practices as well as a feasibility study for the evolution
and progress of the business’s environmental performance, through the integration of the
recommendations.
As a result, this innovative tool achieves a holistic diagnosis of a company’s present situation
in relation to the existing environmental impacts and influences, while identifying any
possible opportunities of improvement, aiming to the attainment of environmental advance
and excellence of a competitively eco – efficient business.
